A child in poor health cannot learn, play, or thrive. A child denied education cannot reach their full potential. Youth without skills cannot secure decent work. And when children and youth are unsafe, they cannot fully enjoy their rights.
Yet for millions of children and youth across Africa, these are everyday barriers standing between them and their right to survive, develop, and participate fully in society. Health, education, skills and protection are not optional. They are essential building blocks for every child’s growth, and every nation’s progress.
A child in poor health cannot stay in school. A child denied an education cannot reach their full potential. Youth without skills cannot secure decent work. And when children and youth are unsafe, they cannot fully enjoy their rights
Yet for millions of children across Africa, these are everyday barriers standing between them and their right to survive, develop, and participate fully in society. Health, education, skills and protection are not optional. They are essential building blocks for every child’s growth, and every nation’s progress.
Across Africa, 285 million children are growing up in poverty, without reliable access to health, education, skills, and safety. Every child holds incredible promise, but fragmented efforts and weak systems continue to limit opportunities for millions of children and youth.
Addressing this challenge requires all of us, with communities leading the change they want to see. We work alongside local organizations, governments, donors, civil society, the private sector, and communities to co-create scalable programs that uplift children, their families, and entire communities. In the 12 countries where we work, our community-driven models are creating lasting impact and adaptable solutions for change across Africa, proving that when communities lead, change lasts.
We put children at the center of work, not just as beneficiaries, but as active participants in shaping their futures. We listen to their voices, honor their rights, and work alongside them to ensure every child grows up healthy, educated, skilled and most importantly – safe.
When communities lead, change lasts. Sustainable progress begins when local voices shape local solutions. No one understands the challenges and solutions better than communities themselves. We walk alongside them, co-creating programs grounded in lived experience, driven by local leadership, and built to last. This is development done with communities, not for them.
We work alongside governments and communities to dismantle barriers and build equitable structures that deliver safety, health, education, and opportunity for every child. The result is scalable, lasting change that starts from the ground up and is sustained by local leadership.
Online abuse of children is a growing crisis. To address this, ChildFund is working with the African Union to develop a Model Law on Child Online Protection. This will provide all 55 member states with a unified legal framework to keep children safe online.
Our programs in health, education, skills, and safety are community-led and data-driven. We track what matters most, from school attendance and learning progress to health outcomes, skills gained, jobs created, children reached with protection services, and emergency relief delivered. In times of crisis, we respond swiftly, delivering life-saving support, restoring access to learning, safeguarding children, and helping families rebuild, ensuring every action brings lasting change for children across Africa.

Palorinya Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda hosts over 122,000 refugees, most of them from South Sudan. Children here face heightened risks of exploitation and abuse. To protect them, ChildFund provides child-friendly spaces for learning, play, and safety, while also training community members to prevent violence against children, girls and women.
